The Midwest Clinic
My first presentation at Midwest was in 2003 and the audio/visual options at the Hilton were old-school. I used an overhead projector and I no longer have the transparencies. I do, however, have the handout and the script for those willing to wade through text. The focus is conducting practice and pedagogy. The ideas in this session are embedded in "Influencing Sound: Myths, Metaphors, and Musicianship" (see Writing tab).
In 2006 I was invited to present a rehearsal lab - a fairly new concept for Midwest at the time. The session was no-tech, but high in human capital. Special thanks to Dave Allie and the Memorial Junior High School Band of Lansing, Illinois. Here's the handout.
In 2011 I returned to the lectern with the up-to-date tech infrastructure of Midwest's new home, McCormick Place. Here's the handout, and a video podcast version of the presentation. For those new to the site, this is the best place to start. It's a session on artistry that lays the foundation for most of my work.
My 2015 session at The Midwest Clinic was great fun! I brought along students from the UNL Wind Ensemble to demonstrate the games and concepts. Here are the handout and PDFs of the slideshow. Have questions or comments to share? Drop me a line: mailto:firstname.lastname@example.org
